Position: Fellow in Stroke, Cerebrovascular Disease, and Neurosonology.

Description: The Department of Neurology at the Wake Forest University School of Medicine, Winston-Salem, North Carolina, is recognized for excellence in stroke and cerebrovascular disease, and neurosonology. Funded as a PGY-5 or PGY-6 position, this Fellowship includes 1-2 years of work emphasizing the clinical stroke and neurosonology services, as well as participation in a variety of research projects. During the optional second year, the possibility for elective rotations in a variety of subjects including Neurorehabilitation, Neurosurgery, Neuroimaging, PET, or time with Stroke Research Center (Dr. James Toole, Director), Health Services Research Center (Dr. David Goff, Director), or Public Health Sciences (Dr. Greg Burke, Chairman).

Research opportunities include acute stroke treatment, stroke prevention, sports-related concussion, and many other possible projects using carotid ultrasound and TCD, including monitoring, screening studies, TCCD, and Dynamic Vascular Analysis for TCD. All Fellows attend the Neurovascular Ultrasound Courses, will participate in the Dynamic Vascular Analysis Reading Center, and will meet eligibility criteria for the Neurosonology Certification Examination of the American Society of Neuroimaging. Fellows interact with the Multi-Disciplinary Stroke Team and Stroke Service, with dedicated Stroke faculty (Drs. Reynolds, Lefkowitz, Bettermann, Kim, and Tegeler). The current salary for this position is about $45,000. This fellowship is not currently approved by the ACGME, so would not fulfill eligibility criteria to sit for the new Vascular Neurology Subspecialty Board examination of the America Board of Medical Specialties. Because this is a clinical position, requiring an institutional training license, candidates must have an ECFMG Certificate, or have fulfilled all requirements for the USMLE.
