| ¡@¡@The study group "Ultrasound in Neurosurgery" was
founded 1999 in Wuerzburg, Germany, on the occasion of a workshop about
this topic. Eight neurosurgeons, all experienced in intraoperative and/
or transcranial sonographic imaging in neurosurgery decided to work together
continuously to evaluate and develop ultrasound imaging during neurosurgical
procedures practically and scientifically. |
| ¡@¡@One of the main topics is the design of a special training
of neurosurgeons interested in ultrasound imaging. This one-day seminar
was held the first time in March 2001 in Wuerzburg, the second and third
will follow in September 2001 and March 2002. The seminar includes subjects
like physics of sonographic imaging, artefact detection and interpretation,
transducer technology, new technologies and imaging interpretation in different
intracerebral lesions. We offer also practical trainings in the operating
rooms of the neurosurgical departments located all over Germany and Switzerland. |
| ¡@¡@In addition studies were outlined about the infection rate
during use of intraoperative ultrasound and about the usefulness of intraoperative
ultrasound for resection control during glioma surgery. |
| ¡@¡@The results of a questionnaire about the use of sonographic
imaging in neurosurgical departments in Germany showed that two thirds of
the departments use intraoperative ultrasound, mostly for localisation and
puncture of cysts and hematomas (database: 49 of 125 returned questionnaires). |
